Living in Black & White.

Proving that ebony and ivory really do live together in perfect harmony, Century Furniture unveils a bouquet of black & white upholstered creations.

High Point Furniture Market (October 2007)Black & white is hot. And, well, cool. During New York’s Fashion Week in September, ebony and ivory prevailed, draped over the lithe frames of runway models and celebrities alike. Anywhere you look these days, you see black & white intertwined—on everything from Kate Spade note cards to Coach umbrellas to Zac Posen woven leather bags. Monochromatic photography is thriving, with niche studios springing up to meet consumer demand for everything from black & white wedding albums to black & white websites.

In light of this trend, it’s no surprise that Century Furniture plans to unleash a bevy of black & white upholstery at the Fall 2007 International Home Furnishings Market. “This is a powerful combination,” says Edward M. Tashjian, VP of Marketing for Century. “Think about it: black is mystery and sophistication, white is purity and innocence. Yin and yang. Together, they represent wholeness and balance. Designers take this concept very seriously, and for good reason. People respond to black & white in a way that’s almost visceral.” Of course, black & white décor doesn’t appeal to us only on a subconscious, spiritual level. We appreciate its practicality as well. Century offers the following reasons to dress your home in black & white:

• Black & white is timeless. It never goes out of style. Think about the two wardrobe “classics” every woman recognizes: the little black dress and the elegant white blouse. These shades are timeless in the home as they are on the body. “Colors tend to be trendy so it’s easy for them to become dated,” points out Tashjian. “For instance, most people associate avocado and gold with the 70s, and peach and teal with the 80s. Not so with black and white. They’ll look as stylish in 20 years as they do right now.”

• Black & white is versatile. It can go dressy or casual, traditional or modern. Consider a simple white silk tee shirt. Wear it with a suit and heels and you’re ready for the boardroom. Pair it with jeans and sandals and you’re dressed for a picnic. Black garments, of course, are equally versatile. It’s easy to envision how furniture in these shades can move from one décor extreme to another with ease. “A piece like our Midnight Velvet Chair is just as at home in an 18th century formal living room as it would be in, say, a stark modern loft,” says Tashjian.
“The classic shape is a nod to traditional sensibilities, while the nickel nailhead trim brings it into the contemporary realm.”
• It’s the perfect foil for color. We all love bold splashes of color—on walls, in area rugs, in art work and accessories, and even in furniture itself—but sometimes the eye needs a break. Black & white is the perfect visual balance. Plus, (good news for the design challenged) it “goes” with virtually any color. “Position a pair of our Garden Gate chairs in front of a lime green wall (page 1) and see how vivid they make the backdrop look,” says Tashjian. “Or let black & white dominate, as we’ve done (right/left/above) with our Tuxedo Wing Chairs against a wall of vertical stripes, and a sky blue mirror stands out like a jewel.”
“It’s hard to make a mistake with black & white,” he concludes. “It’s classic, stylish and versatile. It doesn’t limit your options. You can have fun with it.

Black & White Creations by Century Furniture

A profusion of black flowers, leaves and vines flourish on a snowy backdrop in this curvy club chair. The complex pattern on the damask-like cotton print requires expert flow matching. Note the buttons and dress-maker pleats. It’s a true testament to the upholsterer’s art.

This modern take on a classic wing chair features black woven acrylic trimmed in bold white welt. A checkered houndstooth throw pillow carries through on the “menswear” theme. Slender exposed wood legs with casters.

This dazzling white confection of an ottoman, sprinkled with black buttons and outlined in a wide ebony border, has a scalloped square shape. Upholstered in a buttery soft faux Brisa leather with gentle tufts, it is positively decadent to the touch.

The swirling white-on-black pattern on these luxurious seat and back cushions evokes the graceful scrolls of a wrought iron gate. Dressed in a clean white enamel paint finish, the chair itself has a pierced frame of broken circles that sweep around to embrace the occupant. Faceted tapered legs.

The cushioned top of our ottoman features a striking scrollwork print on a black background. Its intricate base, crafted to resemble bamboo, gleams in a fresh white enamel paint finish.

Lustrous nickel nailheads march around the perimeter of this comfy club chair, accentuating its flowing lines and creating a stunning contrast to the rich ebony velvet. Plush back pillow. Exposed wood legs.
