Grand Designs:
Two Century Furniture Designers Win ASFD Pinnacle Awards

Bill Faber and Richard Frinier return from Fall 2007 Furniture Market bearing coveted industry design awards for their New Traditional and Kyoto collections, respectively.

Hickory, NC (October 2007)—Translucent creamy onyx contrasts with fiery Cerejeira wood grain…icy chromefinished pulls on a traditional armoire cause a frisson of surprise…artfully rendered metal evokes the geometric precision of Asian Tatami mats. Century Furniture designers have always had an eye for stunning (and often unexpected) detail, and a recent pair of prestigious awards prove the North Carolina company still has the “right stuff.”

Earlier this month, the American Society of Furniture Designers honored two Century collections with Pinnacle Design Achievement Awards. New Traditional by Bill Faber won the Pinnacle Award for Major Collections, the industry equivalent of a “Best Picture” Oscar. In addition, Kyoto by Richard Frinier for Century Furniture took home the Pinnacle for the Summer/Casual category.
New Traditional, introduced in October of 2006, is an updated take on eighteenth century bedroom, dining room, and occasional designs. Century describes it as “traditional with a twist.” Instead of heavy carvings and formal ball & claw feet, the pieces feature sleek planes of rich-grained wood veneers, elements such as chromefinished
metal ferrules, and fresh paint accent finishes in colors like Sky, Meadow, and Crimson.
Judges’ comments included: Very versatile collection with engaging colors and adaptable in multiple environments. The wood and metal combination offer a “wow” factor with the sophisticated tribute to texture and surface interest.
This is not Faber’s first Pinnacle Award. He also won awards for the Omni
Geometric Dining Table in 2006, the Napoleon Bed from Consulate in 2005, and Matilda Bay (Best Collection) in 2001.
Kyoto, which debuted in fall 2005, is an indoor/outdoor collection inspired by the elegance and serenity of ancient Japan. It features seating and table designs comprised of sleek aluminum frames and luxuriously tailored cushions. Interpretations of traditional elements found in the architecture of teahouses, Shoji screens, and Tatami mats appear throughout.
Judges’ comments were as follows: A perfect example of taking outdoor or patio furniture to a new sophisticated level. It at once demonstrates refined scale but with attention to comfort. There is an extensive range of product to complete any design whether it is used inside the home or out.
In 2005, Frinier received a Pinnacle Award for his Gulf Stream
collection.
The Pinnacle Design Achievement Awards celebrate designs that are
produced in large numbers for sale to customers through retail stores.
What makes these the premier awards in the furniture industry is the
fact that the winners are selected by a jury of distinguished designers and
editors.
The awards were presented in fifteen categories at a reception and banquet held during the Fall International Home Furnishings Market. The High Point Market is the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world, bringing more than 85,000 people to High Point every six months. Faber and Frinier were two of sixty finalists vying for the coveted awards.

“We are honored to have the finest designers in the industry innovating new products for the Century brand,” says Edward M. Tashjian, Vice President of Marketing for Century Furniture. “And when you see some of the incredible designs in the marketplace, you know it’s a tough playing field. It takes a rare combination of vision and raw talent to consistently come through with furniture that’s not only beautiful, but also livable and relevant.
“Century’s customers expect nothing less than the best and that’s what we must give them,” he adds. “These awards prove that, once again, our designers are up to the challenge.”
