From these picturesque lands that stretch from the Mediterranean to the farmlands rich with olives and grapes comes the inspiration for Marbella. A collection of European designs, all pieces are bench made with rich hand carved details in mahogany, walnut and oak and using old world techniques that only the most skilled artisans still know. Hand distressed cases with a beautiful waxed finish and hammered bronze accents force you to sweep a hand over the case in order to appreciate the true beauty of each piece.

“Marbella is all about the wood and the natural beauty it possesses,” explains Eric Graham, Senior Manager of Century’s Casegoods and Leisure Divisions. “Every piece in this collection has such old world detail and craftsmanship, whether it is the actual distressing which is all done by hand, or the intricate turnings of the legs, the carved paw feet of a chest, the way the veneer patterns are cut. It is simply beautiful.”

The intricate detail and craftsmanship is demonstrated in the sunburst pattern of walnut veneers radiating across the headboard and footboard of one of Marbella’s signature beds. A traditional carved profile of maple solids frames the three piece walnut placáge of the headboard and footboard. Each corner post is also decorated with burl. “This bed reminds me of rich sunsets and glorious sunrises, of feather bedding and needlepoint pillows,” says Comer Wear, Director of Marketing for Century Furniture. “It speaks of comfort, yet has such a commanding presence.”

Another focal point in the collection is the incredibly shaped top and spiral carved legs on the round dining table. Focused around a walnut burl center are planked cut walnut veneers framed by a radius of walnut burl which rests on four highly carved legs. This table is complimented by the hand carved mahogany dining chairs which feature a walnut detail across back splats and distressed tan leather on the seats accented by bronze nail trim.

Other notable design details featured in the collection are a hand carved Gothic arcs on the Credenza and Entertainment Console; a checkered pattern carving across the drawer fronts of a console table, which also showcases an inlaid song cut square top; hidden drawers tucked behind side doors featuring English brown oak burl that flank both sides of the Gentleman’s Tall Chest; and exposed dovetail joinery on the corners of the fancy foot drawer chest.

The Marbella collection surprises and delights in the amount of detail revealed the longer you gaze at its pieces. “We have long mused that furniture should grow more beautiful the closer you get to it, and the more you live with it,” says Wear. “Marbella achieves this in a surprisingly subtle and casual way. It allows us to create an unpretentious, lived in environment that speaks to today’s relaxed and less formal lifestyles.”
