At Century Furniture, the monogram is truly making a name for itself.
Here’s why we love this classic form of self-expression.

High Point Furniture Market (October 2008)—Monograms are back. And no wonder. They provide a cachet that can’t be replicated in any other way. Taking a cue from long-ago monarchs who used monograms to proclaim their nobility, people emboss, engrave, and embroider their initials on everything from stationery to cuff links to baby blankets. Now, discerning consumers are increasingly choosing to place their personal “brand” on the furnishings that make their house a home.

“High-end designers have incorporated embroidered monograms for decades,” says Edward M. Tashjian, VP of Marketing for Century Furniture, which has long offered custom monogramming on throw pillows, settees, and chair backs. “It is a sign of distinction and a flourish of personal style. Monograms are for people who appreciate the details of fine tailoring.”
There are two basic types of monogramming, he explains: initials and medallions. Initials reflect an understated elegance. Medallions are even more expressive, demonstrating panache and personality.
“The biggest style trend today isn’t contemporary or traditional—it’s personal,”
adds Tashjian. “Century has always sought to help people express themselves through customized, personalized furniture. Monograms take that a step further.”
At the Fall 2008 International Home Furnishings Market, Century will spotlight the monogram in all its clean, classic, tailored glory. For instance, monogrammed navy throw pillows will grace a pair of club chairs upholstered in blue & white cotton ticking.
The look is part of a certain polished yet comfortable attitude— call it preppy or call it coastal—that’s quietly asserting itself in fashionable homes across America. Monograms cohabit well with soft pinks, crisp greens, fresh blues and whites, and
khakis…colors and textures that are upscale but wonderfully livable.
“People who customize their furnishings tend to be well traveled, independent, and self-assured,” says Tashjian.
“Monograms are not elitist, but rather a very personal way to define your space in the world. Best of all, they’ll never go out of style.”
