The green trend goes high-end with the debut of the
Earth-friendly Natural upholstery collection from Century Furniture.

High Point Furniture Market (October 2008)—The most beautiful, livable homes
are inspired by nature. It’s easy to see why. The Earth provides everything we need to nourish, clothe, and comfort ourselves. And its interplays of light and shadow, as well as its graceful, flowing silhouettes, please the eye and calm the spirit. When we surround ourselves with elements from the natural world, we live simpler, more balanced, more authentic lives. That’s the idea behind Natural, Century Furniture’s new collection of environmentally conscious upholstery.
Century will showcase its Natural collection at the Fall 2008 International Home Furnishings Market. These fresh, contemporary sofas, chairs, and loveseats—created by 2008 ASFD Pinnacle Design Finalist Craig Staton—feature graceful curves, long sweeping lines, and deep, generous dimensions. Best of all, they’re covered in exquisitely natural fabrics.

“These pieces are made with 100 percent raw silk, wool, hemp, and organic cotton,” says Alex Shuford III, VP of Upholstery for Century. “We’ve chosen the most natural, touchable, beautiful fabrics we could find. Even the hidden materials are organic and sustainable. Natural redefines comfort, for the body as well as the soul.”
To craft this upholstery, Century artisans work with soy-based eco-friendly
foam, natural cushioning fibers, natural goose down feathers, sustainable hardwood
frames—even 50 percent recycled metal springs that are made in the USA. All pieces, of course, are handcrafted using time-honored furniture making techniques.
Yet, for all its focus on sustainability with its new collection, Century hasn’t lost its touch for upscale design and fine quality.
“While we all know instinctively that green is serene, we don’t want to embrace it at the expense of design sophistication,” notes Shuford. “Natural lets our customers enhance their homes with Earth-friendly, organic upholstery without sacrificing style. It’s the perfect balance of sustainable elements and timeless design.
Natural appeals to discerning consumers who appreciate fine design, uncompromising comfort, and calm, balanced living,” he adds. “The fact that it’s ‘green’ could almost be seen as a bonus. This upholstery proves it is possible to have it all: high style, high quality, and a high regard for the environment.”
